Our small team of researchers, marketers, and social entrepreneurs launched this project in March 2020 to better understand how the Church - denominations and influencers - responds to global crisis.
We believe the Church is called to be Christ’s hands and feet, serving sacrificially wherever there is suffering and in doing so modelling Christ’s love to the rest of the world. The COVID-19 pandemic presents us with a unique opportunity to honor that call in a highly impactful and visible way.
A variety of Christian organization and influencers has generated an enormous amount of online content around the coronavirus, including calls to prayer, histories of the churches’ engagement in pandemics in the past, and concrete guides and lists of opportunities to take action.
Our decision to choose "Salt and Light" as the project name is reflected in the Bible in the Book of Matthew, Chapter 5:
"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven."
